Tom hails from a family steeped in racing history. He rode his first winner on the Flat in 1998. In 2001 he was crowned Champion Amateur Jockey; later that year he turned professional. In 2007 he secured the much-coveted role as stable jockey to David Pipe. In the 2013/14 season, he rode 100 winners.

During a glittering career, Tom recorded 10 Cheltenham Festival winners, including the 2016 World Hurdle on Thistlecrack. The pair also won the 2016 King George VI Chase.

At the time of his retirement, Tom was tenth on the all-time Jump Jockeys winners list.
