Herefordshire-born Richard is the second most prolific winning jockey in the history of National Hunt Racing. Twice a winner of the Cheltenham Gold Cup; Looks Like Trouble, 2000 and Native River, 2018 Richard went on to ride 22 Cheltenham Festival winners in a career that spanned 27 years. Crowned Champion Jump Jockey on four occasions and runner-up on 17 occasions; 16 to Sir AP McCoy OBE. He rode more than 100 winners every season from 1996/97.

Richard was appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in the 2019 New Year Honours for services to Horseracing.
