With a Cheltenham Festival win and a Hennessy Gold Cup to his name, “Batch” rode his first winner in 1996 in a Novice Hurdle. He would go on to ride the likes of King Harald to victory in the 2005 Jewson Novices’ Handicap Chase and Carruthers to land the 2009 Reynoldstown Novices’ Chase and the 2011 Hennessey Gold Cup Chase. Mattie also played a pivotal role in the early education of Gold Cup winner, Coneygree’s career.
